How to approach maritime security in 2022 and beyond

In the maritime world, safety and security are paramount. Major actors in maritime policy, ocean governance and international security include maritime security as a priority for their mandate. The demands on maritime operations today are increasingly higher in terms of control, efficiency, and cost. The margins for accidents and security incidents are as a result therefore decreasing, but it is up to the maritime companies to adjust the efficiency of their security measures to meet the current challenges.

The maritime security industry has evolved rapidly in response to the growing threat of international piracy.

In the area of ship safety, the regulations, guidelines, and methods have a history and culture of systematic research, development, and implementation.

To many observers, maritime security appears to be a large and sometimes not fully understood concept. In fact, it has become an enormous task involving diverse entities from international, public, and private sectors focusing on:

• preserving the freedom of the seas

• facilitating and defending commerce

• maintaining good governance at sea

All the nations using maritime transport and all the nations benefiting from it engage in making the seas more secure. At the same time, for all these state entities, maritime security is a priority.

Maritime Security Training

Shipping operations and ships represent great monetary as well as symbolic value and can become the target of security threats such as robbery, piracy, or terrorist attack.

The purpose of naval ships is to protect (offensively and defensively) national interests against threats during war or other types of crises. Therefore, for both merchant and navy ships, there is a need to analyse the threat and reduce the potential effects of an attack.

We strongly believe that maritime training is one of the most crucial factors to consider in achieving safe and secure operations of vessels. Therefore, we also strongly believe that our courses, specifically designed and crafted for maritime security professionals, provide the proper knowledge, reaction, and training for our course participants.

We provide a complete range of industry-accredited courses to maritime security professionals. For example, the Cruise Line Crisis Management Simulator is a special mix of instructor-led classroom and simulation software, designed to improve the Cruise Line’s strategic response to threats and incidents while providing a unique participant experience.

Fortunately, the vast majority of the world’s cruise ships and their crews have never had to experience major events first hand and it is sometimes a difficult concept to grasp for some during basic training. Using custom-made video clips trainees are immersed in realistic situations which make the crisis event relevant to them and hence, reinforce their learning.

The simulation software allows members of the Cruise Line Emergency Response Organisation to visualise the progression of an incident or crisis and enable them to respond to challenges and changing scenarios in both real-time and in a realistic manner. The simulator interface allows for recording of all decision-making, real-time communication and their corresponding actions against the scenario timeline. This system also provides an enhanced analysis tool of the ship’s crisis management abilities. The feature is extremely useful for the exercise to debrief and for advancing best practices as well as a useful tool for measuring the suitability of existing onboard emergency protocols.

The various maritime simulations reflect prevailing operational procedures designed to confront critical strategic dilemmas and the participants can represent their positions within the Cruise Line’s Emergency Response Organisation improving their skill set and experiences.

Maritime safety training is offered to numerous organisations, mainly from the military and institutional communities:

• Navy

• Coast Guard
